Bumper awards haul highlights SGP’s focus on core values and diversity of sectors

Stephen George + Partners (SGP) is celebrating a bumper year of award successes, having achieved eight wins and eight finalist or shortlist places on prestigious award schemes. These nominations showcase the practice’s excellence in sustainability, interior design and collaborative working, highlighting outstanding refurbishment and new build projects in the transport, industrial, education, heritage, residential and office sectors.

Exemplifying the practice’s commitment to social responsibility, SGP has been chosen as a finalist in the Planet Mark awards, in both the community engagement category for its Better Buildings Programme and for Simon Matthews in the Game Changer category. SGP is working with local schools and teachers to launch Better Buildings, a free interactive toolkit introducing primary school children to the importance of building sustainably. SGP and Simon have a nail-biting wait to hear if they have been chosen as winners, as the Awards have been delayed until Thursday 19 January 2023.

Other SGP successes include winning Best Project Award in the RTPI East Midlands Awards for Planning Excellence, with exterior and interior designs for The Hub, Prologis’ first bespoke education facility, at DIRFT in Northamptonshire, the UK’s largest rail-served logistics park.

RTPI East Midlands Awards judge Lynette Swinburne MRTPI said: “The Hub at DIRFT puts sustainability and wellbeing at the heart of the design approach, resulting in a ground-breaking facility that has achieved a significant reduction in embodied/operational carbon emissions and offers an exceptional environment to learn, work and train in.”

Working directly with client, The 55 Group, SGP designed a complete refurbishment of an 1878 Grade II ex-banking hall in Hull, creating a modern, agile workspace with a basement “Speakeasy” members’ bar, private roof top terrace, meeting rooms, social spaces including a juice bar and three floors of offices that could be let out. The practical and evocative design, retaining or reusing a myriad of original decorative features, earned SGP’s Interior Design team a place on the shortlist for the inaugural BIID Interior Design Awards.

Meanwhile, SGP’s transport team has seen its work on Broad Marsh Bus Station and MSCP winning or being shortlisted for several awards including Business Insider – East Midlands Brick Awards, East Midlands Insider Awards, Constructing Excellence Award East Midlands and British Parking Awards. The team’s transportation successes continued with Stevenage Bus Interchange winning the Project of the Year category in the Herts & Beds round of the CE Awards and Halifax Bus Station being shortlisted for Infrastructure Project of the Year at the UKREiiF awards.
