Demonstration and Learning

At Stephen George + Partners (SGP) social responsibility is a core principle reflected in both practice and design. Since the 1970s, we have steadily advanced our sustainability efforts, notably accelerated by the 2008 SusCon project, a groundbreaking Sustainable Construction Training and Research Centre. Developed in collaboration with Dartford Borough Council, Prologis, and North West Kent College, SusCon set new standards for sustainable architecture and earned a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rating; the highest ever for an educational facility at the time.
SusCon empowered SGP to experiment with materials, technologies, and design approaches beyond conventional boundaries. The project’s legacy continues through SGP’s Guide to Building Materials and the Environment, a free, award-winning publication that began with insights gained at SusCon. It also inspired educational outreach, including student site tours and the Better Buildings Programme, aimed at introducing sustainability to schoolchildren.
SusCon was more than a building, it was a catalyst for cultural change, both within SGP and across the construction industry. It remains a model of how demonstration projects can drive innovation, knowledge sharing, and meaningful progress toward Net Zero Carbon.
