From farm yard to home stead – SGP completes charming timber framed homes in Northamptonshire countryside

Stephen George & Partners LLP (SGP) is delighted to announce the completion of a charming residential development of ten timber framed homes on a 0.7 hectare ex-farmyard, at Weston by Welland, in the beautiful Northamptonshire countryside.

In the heart of the Welland valley, the development is made up of two- to five- bedroom homes and includes an expansive Northamptonshire stone farmhouse style detached property which acts a gateway for the development. Four of the homes are affordable housing whilst the rest are for private sale.

Working closely with developer Langton Homes, SGP designed a well-mannered group of houses that sits seamlessly within the rural / village patchwork of the landscape, taking inspiration from the local vernacular and paying tribute to the site’s farming heritage. Ranged around a traditionally inspired landscaped courtyard, the homes display a controlled palette of brick, stone and timber materials to deliver individually detailed houses that give the feeling of converted barns and workers’ cottages in a single coherent site.

Explains Nicola Pettman, Studio Director at SGP: “Having worked before with Langton Homes on the award-winning Tur Langton project, we were delighted to design another set of thoughtful and beautiful houses that deliver on Langton’s commitment to quality and individuality. That all the units have sold off plan is a testament to the appeal of the new homes.”

Sustainability was a key driver for the development and, in addition to the highly insulated timber frame construction enabling high air tightness and high thermal performance, the houses will be using air source heat pumps as renewable heating and all the garages will incorporate a socket or charging point for electric cars.

Concludes Nicola: “We have managed to retain the existing hedgerows and some of the trees on the site and have added new native hedgerows on the boundaries. We took up the old yard’s hardstanding and old tractor sheds and added soft landscaping and pockets of natural planting. So, along with the mellowing of the timber elements of the houses, the development will fade gently into its landscape. In the end, this is a sensitive development that delivers high quality accommodation without destroying the charm of its surroundings.”
