York Teaching Hospital Butterfly Bench
We are looking for organisations to help fund the creation of the ‘Butterfly Bench’ which forms an integral part of the new Maternity Bereavement Suite Refurbishment at the York Teaching Hospital.
The new suite has direct access to an external courtyard however it is overlooked by adjacent rooms. To address this the ‘Butterfly Bench’ has been designed to provide a screened seating area, where bereaved families can sit privately.
Designed in collaboration with our London and Leeds offices, our design borrows many principles from nature, taking cues from the ‘pinch’ of a butterfly to generate a ‘shell lace’ self-bracing structure – inspired by the Tower of Light.
The screen is manufactured from a flat sheet steel, laser cut and rolled into strips. The undulating edges are stitch welded together creating a network of ribs that act like a truss.
